What would you do in my place?
Posted August 23, 2012
In the more than 15 years since the Goathouse Refuge was founded, I have never seen the pain, suffering and desperation that I have been witnessing this year…people crying because they are forced to leave behind their beloved pets when they lose their jobs and their homes – cats and dogs left behind in streets, apartments, woods, and in shelters where they are killed every day.*
In NC, 250,000 animals will be destroyed this year, many in gassing shelters!**
Toodles (left) is one of those we saved from such a high kill shelter. From April to the end of June, we have taken in more than 90 cats and kittens like Toodles and we are now working very hard — the whole Goathouse Team — to keep them healthy, well fed and happy, and to find a family for each one of them.
We receive 10 to 15 appeals every day from people who need to find a home for one or multiple cats. At least twice per week, we receive photos of these poor creatures from volunteers who work with high-kill shelters. Their eyes tell you their grief and desperation for having lost their families and being in a place where pain and fear are the only smell they sense.
Will you help us help these cats?
As a no-kill shelter, the Goathouse is full to bursting and the need for additional food and healthcare is stretching our resources beyond our supplies.
At this point, I must ask you, our friends and supporters, to help us out. We have big bills to pay, some overdue. The spay and neutering alone for the 28 cats that will go under surgery on Friday is going to cost us $2,000. We are not afraid of working hard, but we need money to care for the cats. A Board Member plus a longtime friend of the Refuge have committed an $11,000 gift if the Refuge raises an additional $11,000 by the end of September. Please help us raise $11,000 by the end of September and give what you are able.
You may either Donate via Paypal or mail a check to: The Goathouse Refuge, 680 Alton Alston Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

The cats and kittens of the Goathouse thank you!

* Around 85 percent of animals taken to shelters in NC are destroyed.
** NC ranks worst in the Nation: While most States are leaving behind the cruelty of the killing in gas chambers, NC has the highest percentage of animals killed in gas chambers. The number of animals left in shelters has grown 400% and so has the number of animals killed in them (SPCA, 2010).
