We know that being exposed to cigarette smoke can harm even non-smokers. Did you know that second-hand smoke can also harm your pets? If you need another motivator to quit smoking this year, learn more about the growing body of research showing the numerous health risks for pets exposed to second-hand smoke.
According to one recent study:
“Our findings show that exposure to smoke in the home is having a direct impact on pets,” says study leader Clare Knottenbelt. “It risks ongoing cell damage, increasing weight gain after castration and has previously been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers.”
Cats’ grooming habits can make them especially vulnerable. Research shows that cats who live with smokers may be twice as likely to develop certain kinds of cancers.
