Cupid’s Sustainer drive ended on 2/28 and he’s so grateful for each and every one of our new Sustainers! Thank you all so much!

We want to let you know that Cupid, one of the sweetest, most loving cats we have ever seen, is available for adoption. His ear looks a little mangled but we think that only adds to his charm.

He is FIV+ but he’s off all medications and he only takes an herbal supplement to build his immune system. He would be a perfect addition to any family who wants a huggy, kissy, loving pet. FIV+ cats can live with other cats. FIV requires blood contact, which only happens through fighting/biting (or it’s passed on from mom to kittens), as a result, cats in households with stable social structures where housemates do not fight are at little risk for acquiring FIV infections.

FIV Facts

1. The Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus is a slow virus that affects a cat’s immune system over a period of years.
2. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or other non-felines.
3. FIV cats most often live long, healthy, and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all.
4. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be spread casually – like in litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling and playing. It is rarely spread from a mother to her kittens.
5. The virus can be spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums, or serious, penetrating bite wounds. (Bite wounds of this kind are extremely rare, except in free-roaming, unneutered tomcats.)
6. A neutered cat, in a home, is extremely unlikely to infect other cats, if properly introduced.
7. Many vets are not educated about FIV since the virus was only discovered 15 years ago.
8. FIV-positive cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and free from stress, feed them a high-quality diet, keep and treat any secondary problems as soon as they arise.

It’s never to late to become a Sustainer!

$500 per month will let us feed 12 cats a high quality diet for a whole year!

As a no-kill shelter, we are committed to giving our cats the best care we can while trying to find them loving, adoptive homes. Sustainers give us the best opportunity to do this.

If you ever doubt the good that a Goathouse Sustainer can do for a needy cat, then you need to come meet Cupid. If he could talk, he would most likely say “thank you so much Goathouse Sustainers, you took away my pain and gave me life”. What better way to help us continue to help cats like Cupid than to become a Goathouse Sustainer?

On 1/14/14, from a NC county “shelter”, we pulled Cupid and three other cats and were simply shocked at their condition. The veterinarian had to put one of them to sleep immediately and then proceeded to treat Cupid, stating that they had never seen a cat with such horribly infected ears. The wounds were parasite infested and required hours of treatment. After intensive care, sweet Cupid is doing amazingly well. It is all thanks to each and every one of you who have signed up to be a Goathouse Sustainer, you are the reason we can save perfectly adoptable and sweet cats like Cupid – cats who would have been killed in a NC county “shelter”.

What are Sustainers? Sustainers are people who care about cats – cats like Cupid who have no other options, who support the no-kill mission of the Goathouse Cat Refuge, and they sign up to give a donation to the Refuge on a recurring, monthly basis.

Why are Sustainers so important?
• They give us a known income for the cats, allowing us to plan wisely for the future.
• They give us the ability to continue to work toward our goal of ensuring a stable future for the cats.
• They help us plan future fundraising and grant submission efforts with greater accuracy.
